Ocean Drive Studio made its debut this year with tactical RPG Lost Eidolons. Drawing inspiration from the gameplay of titles like Fire Emblem and combining it with a realistic graphical style and medieval setting, the game has elements to appeal across the RPG spectrum. Although its story and presentation elements wear a little thin after a promising start, there is nonetheless plenty to enjoy thanks to a decently deep battle system that offers plenty of challenge for those who want it. It’s a strong debut that offers plenty of optimism for the developer’s future projects.
Fortunately, the story is decent and the characters do have some personality that helps distinguish them from their drab appearances. They aren’t particularly memorable characters, but some solid voice acting helps each character feel distinct and present. The voice acting is overall good, but there are some grating and distracting moments. Characters constantly repeat the same line over and over again in battle every time you click them, for example, and certain moments go unacted.
Lost Eidolons‘ story places us as Eden, a young captain who leads a small team consisting of his friends, as they try to make a living in the small city of Loretta. After a certain event, Eden finds himself roaming about until he finds work under a lord, where he must prove that he, alongside his crew, is a dependable group of soldiers.
Lost Eidolons contains a few ways to power up characters. First and foremost is the standard experience-based overall levelling system, but this is accompanied by separate experience levels for individual weapon and armour types. Equipment is a bit less interesting, not helped by a fairly clunky UI, as it boils down to finding a couple of rarer versions of the those items already equipped, with only a few unique items differentiating themselves. Accessories provide some skills, but there aren’t many of them to go around and make it worth trying to build upon. The primary way players can differentiate otherwise similar party members is to branch them off into different classes. There are three tiers of classes, unlocked based on unit stats and story progress, with each tier adding more options to branching into. Different classes let units focus on particular skills or weapons, or in a few cases become all-rounders capable of wielding both magic and weapons.
Skirmishes are the bread and butter of the battles within Lost Eidolons since Eden will have to fight numerous enemies due to following orders, or under certain circumstances. Even though they are skirmishes, every battle in Lost Eidolons‘ chapters is not dull. Throughout my playthrough, I never find myself getting bored during a battle. The mechanics alone are enough to keep me satisfied.
Overall, Lost Eidolons didn’t sweep me off my feet, but it did impress me with its ambition and functionality. This game is a solid and worthy entry in your SRPG library, and I do recommend checking it out. It’s a really good effort and I enjoyed my time with this game. If you have any love for the genre, then I wager you’ll find something to appreciate about Lost Eidolons.
